Do you know the legal requirements for your bicycle?
It's important to understand the rules of the road, and how they help keep you and those around you safe.
There is often confusion regarding safety equipment, let's make it clear.
Bicycle Helmets are not mandatory in Ireland. You do not have to wear a bicycle helmet unless you make a choice to wear one.
Our Opinion: We believe bicycle helmets can be genuinely useful in certain scenarios where the rider is more likely then usual to fall off. New riders, sports cyclists, children, and icy conditions are a sample of examples of when they may play a role in preventing injury.
It's important to understand bicycle helmets are designed to protect the riders head when they fall off a bicycle, they are not designed for collisions with motor vehicles.
There is no legal requirement to wear high visibility clothing. Just like helmets you can opt to wear high-visability clothing.
Our Opinion: High visibility clothing can offer peace of mind and make you visible from even further away, but with adequate lighting we question the necessity for high visibility clothing unless the justification is people more visible to distracted drivers.
There's no downside to being more visible, but you might as well do it in style - swap the yellow jacket for something like a Proviz reflective jacket.
